The Green Action Trust is working with the University of Glasgow to make recommendations on woodland management and wider biodiversity opportunities across its landholding. As part of the research phase, we are welcoming feedback on a range of proposals via a survey, which is open until 22 November 2024.

About Garscube Campus

Garscube Campus is an area of urban greenspace that lies within the Glasgow City region. The Campus stands on what was once Garscube Estate, a large 19th-century property. Much of the original grounds are now given over to housing, recreational, or academic facilities, however the character of the designed landscape, especially by the river around the former house, has persisted.

The woodlands serve a range of functions, perhaps most significantly providing amenity to local people, staff, and students of the university facilities, with the mature broadleaved woods providing an attractive backdrop to the university buildings and other facilities. In other areas, the trees operate as shielding from both noise and air pollution from the nearby busy roads. Finally, all the woodlands make an important carbon sequestration and ecological contribution to the landholding.

Proposals and survey

The intention of this survey is to gather feedback from those using the site on a suite of recommendations for Garscube. The overall aim is to retain and celebrate the site’s heritage, whilst simultaneously improving biodiversity and woodland ecology, and enhancing the amenity value through access improvements.

Overall, actions aim to:

  • Enhance the site’s safety and amenity through tree safety works and access improvements
  • Improve woodland biodiversity and resilience through removal of invasive, non-native species and increasing the range of tree species at all age classes of trees, within existing woodland and throughout the site
  • Where appropriate, increase the wooded area of the Campus grounds by planting new trees
  • Increase the area of pollinator friendly habitat with new wildflower and/or spring bulb planting
  • Create a small wetland amongst an existing area of wet grassland, as a new feature to create interest and to improve biodiversity

We welcome your feedback on these proposals. Click on the maps below to see more details and complete the survey to let us know what you think. Please provide your feedback by 22 November 2024.
