Environmental solutions

Urban greenspace

Increasing the provision of quality greenspace helps people and planet. We have experience in planning and delivering these environments to enable placemaking in the areas that need it most.

What we do

Our expertise in greenspace

Every greenspace site is different, which is why we specialise in delivering projects according to the needs and opportunities of each. Read more about our expertise across five core areas.

Greenspace Creation & Enhancement

We have been at the forefront of creating, enhancing and managing greenspace across Scotland for the last forty years. We create vibrant natural spaces, specialising in addressing environmental inequality in those urban areas that need it most.

Many existing outdoor spaces, while valuable, too often provide poor levels of amenity and biodiversity. By enhancing these sites, we connect people to nature, offer richer habitats and help to address climate change.

Improving Access

It’s all very well creating fantastic natural spaces but the benefits are limited if they are not easily accessible by all.

We create projects that connect local residents and visitors to valuable greenspace. A central part of this process is to ensure these links cater for people of different abilities and needs.

This might involve broadening pathways, using contrasting colours, or altering gradients. No matter what the requirements are, we’ll listen to people’s needs and factor these into the finished result.

Community Growing

Greenspace that offers facilities for communities to come together to grow their own food has huge benefits for mental and physical health, as well as creating sustainable local produce.

We therefore actively support the creation and development of community growing initiatives and the wider Good Food Nation plans and objectives.

In addition, each year we manage the Scottish Government’s Growing Food Together Fund, distributing grants to help develop community growing projects across Scotland. Since 2010 we have distributed over £2M to nearly 100 different groups across Scotland.

Improving Health & Wellbeing

When a key project outcome is better physical and mental health, we can draw on a range of facilities and features, and work them into a new or existing greenspace project.

We design and deliver multifunctional spaces, which help people take exercise, relax in nature, be sociable or learn outdoors. From sports facilities to seating, teaching circles to mixed use paths, incorporating these features adds another dimension to enhancing green spaces for communities.

Greenspace Strategy Development

We work with partners to support them in the development of Green Network, Greenspace and OpenSpace Strategies, translating National and Regional policy frameworks into a local context.

Whether you work in local authority or property development, we can develop your greenspace strategies and deliver the projects to implement them, working closely with communities and local stakeholders to co-design green spaces and networks, secure funding and ultimately deliver them on the ground.

Greenspace Enhancement in Glasgow

This large open space on Avenue End Road in Glasgow had limited value as a featureless mown area. We worked with Glasgow City Council and Seven Lochs Wetland Park to turn this into a community asset that would have real value for people and biodiversity.
