Lead: green action trust

Shotts Nature Park, owned by Green Action Trust, marked its 30th anniversary as a community greenspace in 2020. To commemorate this, we set out to make improvements that would enhance a valued local greenspace for both people and wildlife. This project also delivered on many key aims of the Central Scotland Green Network.

We consulted the local community about changes they would like to see, empowering them to influence and shape developments at their community greenspace.

Supported by North Lanarkshire’s Environmental Key Fund, we increased and enhanced the park’s wetland habitat to boost biodiversity and improve people’s connection to nature.

Total Project Funding: £42,133.56

About the Project

In winter 2019, we surveyed the local community to find out more about how they used the park, what they valued about the site, and also what they would like to see improved.

Although already a great place for walking, jogging, enjoying nature and outdoor learning, some improvements were identified. These included improving the path network, which was often inaccessible or closed as paths were washed out from the pond; improving signage and seating around the site; and making it a better place for wildlife.

We successfully applied to the North Lanarkshire Environmental Key Fund to fund the improvement works. Using our in-house landscape design expertise, we put together a project plan and identified interventions, taking onboard feedback from the local community.

Works onsite were delayed by the covid pandemic, but were completed in 2023. We:

  • Improved the park’s path network and installed new seating and signage
  • Created, restored, and enhanced existing habitats to boost biodiversity
  • Created new wetland habitats, digging out a series of scrapes and developing a new pond
  • Put in pollinator-friendly planting, such wildflower seed and plug plants
